Beschreibung:

An Historical Account of the Rise and Growth of the West-India Collonies, And of the Great Advantages they are to England, in respect to Trade. London: Jo Hindmarsh, 1690. [6], 53 pp. 4to (198 x 146 mm). Modern quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt in compartments. Title rehinged and edges chipped, browning. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE TRACT PROMOTING AMERICAN FREE TRADE. Thomas was a colonial merchant who dedicated himself to lessening the burden on New World plantation owners in terms of both tariffs and pirates. "[This] tract championed the establishment of a common factory and credit bank to encourage the development of West Indian commerce, and also called for the creation of a council of trade composed of experienced merchants, rather than the peers and gentry who dominated the lords of trade" (DNB). There is an interesting table titled, "An Account of what Advantage hands Employ'd in the Collonies are to this Nation per Annum." There is much on sugar, but Thomas also treats of cotton, ginger indigo, and two types of tobacco. Only one copy appears in the auction records for the past 40 years. Goldsmith-Kress 2815; Sabin 32056; Wing T961. Provenance: ownership inscription "W.H. Book" (William Holt) and ownership inscription of Witt. Boothly, both on title-page. Acquisition: purchased from William Reese Company, 2000, $3,250.
