Text illustrations by Donald McKay (8vo) 23.5x15.5 cm. (9¼x5¾"), original cloth-backed marbled boards, glassine jacket; housed in custom cloth slipcase with morocco spine label lettered in gilt. First Separate Edition. One of 370 copies. First separate edition of this favorite episode from The Pastures of Heaven, with a new epilogue by Steinbeck. This work was printed for a group of five bookmen to use as Christmas presents, and all but 20 copies had the presenter's name written in the colophon. This copy was presented to Lewis Gannett (in holograph), author of John Steinbeck: Personal and Bibliographical Notes. Presented at the request of "The colophon," which bears the signatures of Elmer Adler (owner of the press), John T. Winthrop, and F.B. Adams, Jr. Particularly scarce with glassine jacket intact.
