Beschreibung:

Nothing So Monstrous: a Story. [New York: The Pynson Printers], 1936. Half cloth over marbled boards. Fore edge lightly spotted, a few infrequent fox marks, else fine. First separate edition, presentation copy, inscribed, one of 6 copies prepared for Steinbeck out of a complete edition of 370 copies prepared by Elmer Adler for himself and four other subscribers, limited by the paper supply for the binding. Not recorded in Goldstone & Payne, this is one of apparently only six copies with Steinbeck's name on the customized colophon page, reading, “at the request of John Steinbeck on behalf of [blank].” In a letter to Frederick B. Adams, Jr., Steinbeck requested six copies as he couldn't "afford any more." In the appropriate space on the colophon, Steinbeck inscribes this copy to his sister and her husband: “Beth and Gene with love John Steinbeck.” This copy also bears Elizabeth Ainsworth’s bookplate on the front free endpaper. A superb family association copy of what is apparently the most uncommon separate issue of Steinbeck’s bibliography. Goldstone & Payne A2f. See illustration.
