Not recorded in Goldstone & Payne, this is one of apparently only six copies with Steinbeck's name on the customized colophon page, reading, ''at the request of John Steinbeck on behalf of [blank].'' In a letter to Frederick B. Adams, Jr., Steinbeck requested six copies as he couldn't "afford any more." This copy also bears Elizabeth Ainsworth's bookplate on the front free endpaper.
