Hand-coloured engraved title incorporating a portrait of Roggeveen, 35 engraved charts of the West Indies and the Eastern coast of the United States, 33 by Jacob Robijn after Pieter Goos, 2 by Jacob Robijn, most double-page, all coloured in a later hand, numerous woodcut initials, plans and coast profiles decorating the text. (Without the privilege and dedication, several maps shaved at margins, general light browning and staining, the map of the Bahamas torn with loss, the missing section crudely restored in manuscript, corners of text slightly restored.) 20th-century fawn morocco gilt, by Miralles, covers panelled in gilt with borders of red and green morocco inlays enclosing a panel decorated with a semé of fleur de lys around a central coat-of-arms, spine in six compartments similarly decorated and titled in gilt, blue watered-silk linens, top edge gilt, morocco-backed cloth box. ONE OF THE RAREST ATLASES OF NORTH AMERICAN SEA-CHARTS, THIS AN UNRECORDED COPY OF THE FRENCH EDITION OF THE FIRST PART OF 'THE BURNING FEN'. The only other copy of this edition recorded by Koeman is in the New York Public Library. This is a second state of the original Goos maps with the addition of the Robijn imprint, and this copy, like the New York example, lacks the privilege and dedication, as well as having the two additional maps of Curacao (here numbered 71/2) and Catalina; unlike New York this copy has the Goos/Robijn map of the coast of Florida replaced by his later map of Carolina dated 1687, and has an additional chart of the Grand Banks by Robijn. The history of this atlas Het Brandende Veen ('The Burning Fen') is particularly interesting, as the charts include information drawn from captured Spanish manuscript charts in the possession of the Dutch West India Company. Arent Roggeveen was one of the few Dutch chartmakers who was practised in navigation; he was born in Delfshaven and came to Middelburg in 1658 as a school teacher. Middelburg was an important centre of commerce and both the Dutch East India and Dutch West India Companies had chambers there. Roggeveen taught pilots of both companies the art of navigation, and had access to their map collections. He was the first Dutch chartmaker to publish a set of maps for navigation across the Atlantic, along the coasts of North America and around Africa (the second part of this work). Pieter Goos, his publisher, died the same year it was first published, in 1675, and the work was sold to Jacobus Robijn. Roggeveen died in 1679, and Robijn began issuing various Dutch editions with either 33 or 34 maps in 1680 and 1689 and a further edition after 1698. Later the plates passed to Lootsman.
