Hand-coloured lithographic dedication and 120 hand-coloured lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen, most after King. (Occasional spotting of text, a few quires in volume I browned.) Contemporary brown morocco gilt, gilt edges (extremities rubbed). Provenance : George William Turner 1849, gifted to Annie G. Crane 1878 (inscriptions in all three volumes). FIRST OCTAVO EDITION, following the folio edition of 1836-1844. The plates, which Howes describes as 'the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed,' are from King's portraits in the Indian Gallery, Department of War, Washington, which were all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. The octavo edition contained an additional plate of 'Red Bird', used as the frontispiece to volume II, besides additions to the biographies. The famous portrait of Pochontas is included in volume III, and evidence is provided at the end of the volume that it was taken from the copy of a painting made during her visit to England where she died in 1617.
