.476 caliber, 5.5" barrel, S/N 18712 (mfg. ca1887). Blued finish, fire blued small parts, checkered Rampant Colt logo hard rubber grips. Barrel with one-line dual "Hartford & London" address reading COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD, CT U.S.A. DEPOT 14 PALL MALL LONDON. Left front web of triggerguard stamped with the caliber marking 476 CAL. London commercial proof marks under barrel and at the rear of each cylinder flute. No caliber marking present on the bottom of the barrel, under the cylinder pin. Three different bore diameters were used for the English .476 revolvers during their production, initially the .454" which was the same for the .45 Colt and .455 revolvers, later .471" and finally .460". The lack of a bore diameter marking suggests this is the original .454" bore, which was confirmed via caliper measurements. Standard configuration with lanyard ring in butt. During the production of the Colt Model 1878 Revolver, a total of 2,458 were ordered in .476 for the English market. of those, the 5.5" barreled blue guns were the most popular with some 1,682 being produced and shipped. While this is the most common configuration for the .476 Model 1878 revolvers, in terms of overall production this is a rare gun that remains in very nice condition that would be a fine addition to any serious Colt collection. Condition: Fine. Retains most of the blued finish with the majority of the loss due to flaking on the barrel, some holster wear on the ejector housing and some smaller areas of flaking on the frame and cylinder. All markings remain clear and crisp, mechanically functional, fine, bright bore. Grips fine, crisp and free of breaks or cracks, with a milk chocolate color. Matching assembly numbers on frame under left grip and on rear of loading gate.
