.41 Long Colt, 5.5" barrel, S/N 42604 (mfg. ca1899). Nickel finish, checkered Rampant Colt logo hard rubber grips. Standard one-line barrel address, right side of barrel roll marked 41 COLT and bottom of barrel marked 41 under cylinder arbor pin. Lanyard ring in butt. The .41 Colt chambering is quite uncommon in the Model 1878, as only 308 guns were produced in that caliber. Of those, only 85 were produced with 5.5" barrels, 74 in blue and 11 in nickel. Although this gun has been refinished, it appears to have originally been one of the 11 nickel plated guns and as such is a true rarity among Colt Model 1878 revolvers. Condition: Very good, retaining much of the reapplied nickel finish with some moderate flaking and loss, particularly around the front half of the cylinder and on the top strap. Even the screws, trigger and hammer have applied nickel. Mechanically functional, bore good to very good with strong rifling and scattered light pitting which is more moderate near the muzzle. Loading gate missing the operating stud on its upper rear. Grips with wear, with the checkering and logo somewhat soft and worn. Matching assembly numbers on the frame under the left grip and on the rear of the loading gate.Despite the refinish this is a solid example of a very scarce Model 1878 variant.
