PAUL COLIN (1892-1985) "LE TUMULTE NOIR" Paris, Éditions d'Art Succès, circa 1927. In-folio. (Emboitage absent). PAUL COLIN LE TUMULTE NOIR each lithograph 48 cm high by 32 cm. wide; 1ft. 6.5in. 1ft. 5in. 1927 pochoir, comprising a title page with a Paul Colin written dedication to Henri Payre, signed and dated janvier 1930, preface by R.I.P, facsimile handwritten forward by Jospephine Baker titled "Topic of the Day",44 colour lithographs, two others sheets. Graphic designer Paul Colin published a limited edition of lithographs of dancer Josephine Baker and her revue in Paris in 1927, when the French fascination with American Jazz musicians and dancers was at its peak. Indeed Le Tumulte Noir was Colin's visual tribute to the "Black Craze" that swept through Paris in the 1920's, forever altering the artistic and social landscape of that city. Baker is specifically shown three times, wearing a skirt of palm leaves and again wearing the famous skirt of yellow bananas introduced at the Folies-Bergères music hall in 1926. Other images include other dancers, playwrights and personalities in poses that capture the style and movement of the era. Published in an edition of 500, the 44 lithographs of '"Le Tumulte Noir" were drawn on stone by Paul Colin and subsequently coloured by hand using the then-popular and time consuming technique called pochoir which required a seperate stencil for each colour application.
