Napoleonic France.- Latreille (Anthony) Verdun, first English edition, lacks half-title, printed for the Author, 1816 § [Done (Joshua)] Sufferings of a British prisoner lately arrived from France, with various anecdotes of the cruelty exercised by gendarmes on British captives, Printed and Sold for the Author, 1814 § Johnston (A.) Proof of the contempt with which the most sacred rights of British subjects are treated by their government, lacks half-title, letter tipped-in at end from the Foreign Office, for the Author, 1816, together 3 works in 1 vol., foxed and browned, new endpapers, modern half calf, 8vo. *** The plight of Britons interned by the French, with a less than helpful letter from the Foreign Office on the subject. Letter reads: "Mr. Hamilton presents his Compliments to Mr. Gibson... on the Claims of himself and other British Subjects on the French Government for subsistence money during their detention in France, is directed by Viscount Castlereagh... that these Claims have been already Subjects of discussion between the Two Governments, but that... France has entered into no obligation to make them good in any of the late Treaties, it is not competent for His Majesty's Minister to press them to any further consideration of the Subject.- Foreign Office, March 8th 1817."
