Letters to and from the late Samuel Johnson, LL.D. To which are added some Poems never before printed. Published from the original MSS. in her possession by Hester Lynch Piozzi.
London: for A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1788. 2 vols, 8vo (215 x 136 mm.). Contemporary speckled calf gilt, smooth spines in six compartments, black morocco gilt labels in two compartments, a large gilt wheel and star ornament in the rest. Condition: spine ends chipped and joints worn and with some cracking at top, board edges and corners worn. Provenance : Piozzi--Sheridan (see below); with Pickering & Chatto Ltd., Sheridan books from the Theatre Collection were sold to Bernard Quaritch Ltd. in 1981 or 1982; from Quaritch, 1982. first edition, inscribed by hester lynch thrale piozzi "From the Editor" on flyleaf of vol. I, richard brinsley sheridan's copy with his bookplates and a 12-line ink inscription signed with initials RBS on free endpage of vol. II, referencing p. 199 of the text and Susanna Browne and the Brownes of Frampton. Without the errata slip. Courtney, p. 168; Rothschild 1270; Maggs 1038/193-5.
