Missal, with occasional instructions for members of a monastic congregation, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment [French Flanders (probably Charleroi or vicinity), early sixteenth century] 167 leaves (plus 2 original endleaves at front and 1 at back, and 1 contemporary paper endleaf at each end), bound too tightly to collate, but contemporary red foliation at head of verso of leaves showing that two single leaves wanting (ii-xxi, xxiiii, xxvi-clxviii), and perhaps another at end, single column, 6 lines of late gothic bookhand with music on 4-line red stave, capitals in cadels and touched in yellow and red, rubrics in red, initials in simple red or with penwork foliage touched in colour wash and often with human faces picked out in the penwork (some closely resembling the current American Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump in profile), larger initials in ornamental architectural coloured bars on blank or colour wash grounds within frames, one initial with Virgin and Child (fol. 47r), numerous near-contemporary and later marginalia (including a near-contemporary list of saints worthy of praise on parchment endleaf at back), some borders with prick marks perhaps from items once sewn to leaves, a few leaves with borders cut away, water damage with slight losses to blank corner of first few leaves, some scuffs and discolouration in places, the second parchment endleaf at front perhaps once part of a limp parchment binding (now darkened and torn at edges from use), 190 by 140 mm., in sixteenth-century German stamped pigskin binding over bevelled wooden boards, tooled with shields and portraits within concentric bands of foliage, spine and spine-edges painted grey-white, remnants of paper labels on spine (one of nineteenth-century with “9”), crack down middle of leather of spine and remnants of two clasps This book was written for use in a monastic community most probably in the vicinity of Charleroi in south east Belgium: the Litany on fols. 47r-48v has a concentration of local saints, including SS. Gengulph of Florennes, a town just south of Charleroi, Foillan, a seventh-century Irish missionary who settled in nearby Nivelles to the north, and Gaugeric, bishop of Cambrai in the sixth century.
