Beschreibung:

Two leaves from an early Romanesque copy of Isaiah, in Latin, on parchment [Germany, eleventh century] Two leaves, each trimmed at outer edge and foot (with loss of a few characters, and a line or two there), double column, 31 lines remaining in a Romanesque bookhand which leans to the right, with remnants of angular bowing penstrokes of early Carolingian forms of some letters such as ‘r’ (cf. that in Fuldische Handschriften aus Hessen, 1994, no. 56, a mid-eleventh-century Jerome, De Viris Illustribus, from Fulda), ‘e’ with a prominent tongue (cf. ibid., no. 58, a Cicero, De Inventione Rhetorica, from the second half of the eleventh century), capitals ‘L’ and ‘V’ lifted high above the baseline (the latter with a tail which leads it to resemble a large-bodied ‘y’), a strong st-ligature and an elongated and leaning ‘S’-like abbreviation for final ‘-us’, five simple initials in red (some oxidised to silver), one later paragraph mark and “XLI” added in thirteenth- or fourteenth-century, some later corrections and small additions for liturgical reading indicating use throughout the Middle Ages, one sixteenth-century “P70” in red ochre, some scuffs, cuts, and areas of leather adhering to surface (most confined to reverses of leaves), 250 by 190 mm. As noted in the previous lot, Isaiah was of fundamental importance to medieval Christianity, nearly elevating it to the status of a fifth Gospel. That here contains Isaiah 39:2-40:10-26 and 40:27-41:26, and includes Ezechias’ comments on the men of Babylon from the city of Medea, as well as comment on the city of Jerusalem.
