Titles with woodcut printer's device, woodcut illustrations of plants, mammals, fish and shells throughout, those of plants carefully coloured by a later hand. (Some light soiling, a few leaves with light marginal dampstains.) 19th-century morocco-backed marbled boards, spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Leonardus a Botallis of Asti (inscription on title, marginal annotations, partially washed out); marginal annotations in French in an unidentified hand. An extensively illustrated edition of Mattioli's commentary on Dioscorides's De Materia Medica , first published by Valgrisi in 1554. As usual, this edition is bound with Mattioli's Apologia adversus Amathum Lusitanum , published by Valgrisi in 1559. Adams D-669; cf.
