Lot of 50 engravings housed in two brown leather portfolios with the gilt titles Engravings / Our War Generals. Each engraving measures 9.375 x 11.875 overall, and is inside its own paper sleeve. All include facsimile signatures of the subject and credit to engraver J.C. Buttre, New York, and many include credit to the photographer of the image the engraving is based on (most by Brady, with others by Fredricks, Appleton, German, Silsbee, et al.). Featured personalities are mostly Union generals, colonels, commodores, and other officers of note, plus Presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Due to the portrait poses on which the engravings are based, as well as the stated ranks of the military readers and the general selection of personalities chosen for the set, it must have been published in late 1862 or 1863. Note that Ulysses S. Grant was still so relatively anonymous in comparison to some of the other military leaders that the publisher either erred and used the likeness of another man, or could not find a suitable portrait and used an imposter. Also note the early portrait of Lincoln, without beard. While we have seen some of these engravings before, we have never seen the full set in the original leather portfolios. This is a very rare wartime-published collection in very good condition. The following is a full list, in alphabetical order: Anderson, Brig. Gen. Robert Baker Col. Edward Banks, Nathaniel P. Blenker, Maj. Gen. Louis, Brownlow, William G. (anti-secessionist Tennessee newspaper editor and governor) Buell, Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Burnside, Brig. Gen. Ambrose E. Butler, Maj. Gen. Benjamin F.
