Concerning pendulums and their escapements, with references to the author's watch for the longitude, and his complicated proposed theory of music, based on the figure FIRST EDITION. G.H. Thomas Mudge junior's defence of his father's marine chronometer, which failed to win the 10,000 prize offered by Parliament for finding longitude due to mishandling in testing by the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne (see Lots ****). [ Bound with :] Report from the Select Committee of the House of Commons, to whom it was referred to consider of the report which was made from the Committee to whom the petition of Thomas Mudge Watch-maker, was referred . As well as defending his father's marine chronometer by criticising Maskelyne, Mudge petitioned Parliament to recognise his father's work. A Committee found favorably towards him, and despite objections by the Board of Longitude, Parliament awarded him 2,500. Baillie, p. 345; Bromley 656; Norman 1564.
