The description and chronicles of Scotland, from the first originall of the Scottes nation, till the yeare of our Lorde. 1571. The description and chronicles of Yrelande, likewise from the firste originall of that nation, vntill the yeare. 1547. Faithfully gathered and set forth, by Raphaell Holinshed Author: Holinshed, Raphael Place: London Publisher: Lucas Harrison Date: 1577 Description: 4 parts in 2 volumes. With numerous woodcut illustrations; woodcut title-page borders. (folio) 27.5x19.2 cm. (11x7¾"), early calf. First Edition. First edition of the massive chronicles of Great Britain, written and compiled by Raphael Holinshed in conjunction with William Harrison, Richard Stanyhurst, John Hooker and others. Both the historical text and marvelous illustrations are of great note. William Shakespeare used the revised second edition of the Chronicles (published in 1587) as the source for most of his history plays, the plot of Macbeth, and for portions of King Lear and Cymbeline. STC 13568.5. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers detached, text block of Vol. II split in half; known to be lacking a small number of leaves (including the view of Edinburgh), a few leaves detached, title-page of Vol. I mounted, title-page of Laste Parte with portions supplied in ink facsimile, contents generally clean and very good, not collated, sold with all faults.
