CROOKES, William. Modern Views on Matter: The Realisation of a Dream. An Address Delivered before the Congress of Applied Chemistry at Berlin, June 5, 1903 . London: E.J. Davey, 1903. 4 o. Original orange printed wrappers; cloth folding case. Provenance : HENRI BECQUEREL (1852-1908), French physicist (presentation inscription from the author). RARE SEPARATE EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY CROOKES TO HENRI BECQUEREL on the front wrapper: "M. Henri Becquerel With the author's kind regards." Possibly reprinted from Chemical News , of which Crooke's was the editor. Crooke's text is a romantic account of the historic quest for understanding the basic constitution of matter, developed on the ideas of the fundamental structure of matter during the years 1875-1903. One of his focuses is the recent discovery of x-rays and radioactivity. Much of the text reviews the work of Becquerel and the Curies, making it an extemely fine association copy. Crooke was the first speaker the night Becquerel delivered his important lecture at the Royal Institute in London on 7 March 1902 (see lot 11).
