(Tiny hole to b2 in first work with loss of two letters, occasional light spotting and browning.) Slightly later calf, gilt spine, marbled-paper pastedowns, speckled edges (expertly repaired and refurbished). Provenance : F.G. Derling (long notes in a late 17th-/early 18th-century hand in Latin cross-referencing the author's other works on recto of first title and verso second title) -- Carl Friedrich Dingelstadt (deleted ownership inscription to flyleaf dated Halberstadt, 1743). FIRST EDITION OF THE FAMOUS UTOPIA 'CITY OF THE SUN', with separate title and pp.415-464 describing an ideal theocratic philosophical society, where private property and classes have been abolished and life is strictly regulated by science. This volume includes the very scarce second enlarged edition of the second work (first published the previous year in Lyon in only six books). RARE, only three copies recorded at auction since 1975.
