SCHOENBERG, Arnold (1874-1951). Autograph letter signed ('Arnold Schönberg') to Herr Karnrath, Mödling bei Wien, 21 July 1904, responding to a request for advice about a contract with the publisher Max Marschalk: being in the country, Schoenberg does not have his own contract to hand, and even if he did, Karnrath could not expect him to copy it out ('ich schreibe ungern einen Brief, aber wie gar einen abschreiben! das können Sie mir nicht zumüten'); but Karnrath may have entire confidence in Marschalk to draw him up a similar or identical contract to that with Schoenberg ('Marschalk ist ein feiner man ... Er wird also auch für Sie, sicher einen ähnlichen, wo nicht den gleichen zusammenbringen'); in any case the best advice a musician can give in these cases is to consult an experienced lawyer; he was pleased to hear from Karnrath, and hopes the next time he writes it will be about music ('Hoffentlich ist es das Nächstemal auch etwas Musikalisches'), 3 pages, 8vo , bifolium, with Schoenberg's stamped heading. Provenance : Gerd Rosen auction, 27-29 May 1957, catalogue 28, lot 2343.
