(5 1/8 x 2 7/8 in.), contemporary vellum; upper hinge cracked, some pale staining (mostly marginal). In his Latin preface Thomas Erpenius, a leading orientalist in early 17th-century Leiden and its first professor of Arabic, says that he does not understand why Christian professors of Hebrew almost without exception use the Book of Psalms for teaching Hebrew, in spite of its poetical language and its metrical style.
