BIBLE, Hebrew. [Hebrew, then] Quinque libri legis... , Paris: Robert Estienne, 1539-44. 24 parts in 2 volumes, 4° (249 x 170mm). Ruled in red, titles in Hebrew and Latin with woodcut device, text solely in Hebrew, blanks as mentioned by Adams (a few very minor defects) but essentially a good copy in late 16th/early 17th century English (or Scottish) calf, 2 blindstamped line borders round sides, the inner one with gilt cornerpieces, gilt diamond-shaped centrepiece (slightly worn, rebacked, all covers detached). Provenance : John Davidson (his name stamped in gilt on sides), probably the John Davidson (?1549-1603), church leader, fervent protestant and friend of Knox (see DNB); James Sharpe (17th-century signature on an endpaper); James H. Bransby (bookplate). Adams B1221 (bound in a different order). (2)
