WILLIAM THORN (1781-1843) Memoir of the Conquest of Java; with the subsequent operations of the British Forces, in The Oriental Archipelago. To which is subjoined, a statistical and historical sketch of Java; being the result of observations made in a tour through the country; with an account of its dependencies . London: for T. Egerton, 1815. 4° (310 x 240mm). 19 maps, 15 folding, one engraved plate, 16 aquatint plates, 3 folding, by Joseph Jeakes uncut. (Without half-title, very slight spotting to some maps.) Red half morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. SPLENDID UNCUT COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION with the aquatint views of Batavia in strong, luminous impressions, some printed with a deep blue tone, one attributed to Thorn and others to Johannes Rach This work and Raffles's History of Java mark a major step forward in book production in Britain by combining a scientifically original text with beautiful engravings by an accomplished aquatint artist. Thorn's work on Java is one of the most notable of these and it contains the first print to depict the great Taman Sari, the architectural wonder built in 1758 by the Sultan of Jokjakarta. The remaining aquatint views are chiefly of Batavia, while others are of the coastal towns of northern Java. Abbey Travel 553; Bastin & Brommer p.7, notes 110-114.
