FIRST EDITIONS; THE FIRST VOLUME IN THE ORIGINAL DUST-JACKET. Haskett Smith, the leading climber of his day, is often described as the father of English rock climbing. His most famous climb, described here, was his solo first ascent of Napes Needle in 1886 -- an event which marks the foundation of rock-climbing as a sport in its own right and distinct from mountaineering. Ashetton, Pen Yr Gwrydd 1927' (signature; some pencilled climb notes, perhaps also in his hand). Andrews's The Climbs on Lliwedd (London 1909), the first guide issued by the Climbers' Club, from the Library of the Ladies' Alpine Club; and J.M.
