Brooklyn, New York, 1855. 4to, original dark green cloth, gilt-lettered and decorated in blind on front and back covers within a triple gilt rule, gilt-lettered and decorated spine, marbled endpapers, g.e., rebacked with most of the original spine laid down, spine and sides cleaned with gilt touched up, several leaves soiled or stained and/or with tears repaired (mostly marginal, but affecting some letters in the first leaf of the poem) marginal renewing to first few leaves of preface, green half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (one of an edition of 795 and one of 200 copies in this first issue binding), BAL's State B of the copyright notice (two copies are known of State A with the notice in Whitman's holograph), State B of p. 14, State A of the frontispiece, Binding A, engraved frontispiece portrait of Whitman by Hollyer on thick paper with tissue guard.
