VERGILIUS MARO, Publius. Opera . Lyon: Crespin, 1529. 2 parts in one vol. 2 o. Title printed in red and black with woodcut border, second title with device of fleur de lys, circa 200 woodcuts in text (a few repetitions). (Engraved title and last leaf repaired, holes and repairs to c6, N6, N7 and margins of a few other leaves, worming at beginning and end, some light dampstaining and browning.) Modern leather. The woodcuts are the same blocks used in Jacques Sacon's 1517 Lyon edition and are designed for Johann Grüninger's 1502 Strassburg edition. "Grüninger's artist applied to the work a skilled hand and a lively imagination... the Virgil ... is crowded with wonderful pictures, in which on the eve of the Renaissance Virgil is thoroughly medievalized."
