(Blank margins of title restored, first quire frayed and re-inserted and A6 misbound; clean tears in leaves R4, EE8, MM6, d7 and f7 without loss of text; occasional staining throughout.) Contemporary blindtooled calf over wooden boards (restored and rebacked, clasps lacking), pastedowns from a 13th century Italian legal manuscript. Provenance : Petrus Mell? (faint 16th century inscription on title); presented to the Augustinian monastery in Cologne by Petrus Metternich in 1641; Count Arenberg with the booklabel 'Nordkirchen'. A copy in contemporary colouring of one of the great German woodcut books of the Renaissance, the masterpiece of the artist known as the Late Master of the Grüninger Workshop. Sebastian Brant was commissioned by the publisher to edit the work and based his commentary on that of Cristoforo Landino, adding several poems not in earlier editions of Virgil.
