VEGETARIANISM] PHILOTHEOS PHYSIOLOGUS[=TRYON, THOMAS] The way to health, long life and happiness, or, A discourse of tempera... ... London: Andrew Sowle, 1683. First edition. Contemporary panelled calf. 7 x 4 1/2 inches (18 x 11.5 cm); [16], 669, [3-ads] pp. Binding worn, a split on the spine restored with a leather strip, internally a paperclip mark on the initial advertisement leaf, stitching cracked between pp. 334-335 but holding firm on a repair, generally a rather clean copy though with occasional early marginal annotations in ink, singling out particular passages. Tryon, who was an ascetic and a vegetarian, was influenced by Jacob Böhme, Hinduism, Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa etc. This was his most widely read book. It influenced Benjamin Franklin in his adoption of vegetarianism, and was a powerful influence well into the 19th century. He had travelled to Barbados (where he lived intermittently for about five years) but was dismayed by the cruelty of slavery. Bitting pp. 466-67; ESTC R10677. C Collection from the Estate of Robert Rieber
