The Proceedings of the Executive of the United States Respecting the Insurgents.
Philadelphia: John Fenno, Printer to the Senate of the United States, 1795. 130 pp., 8vo (203 x 125 mm). Modern half calf. Condition : scattered browning, early manuscript page numbering. Washington’s 19 November 1794 Sixth Annual Message to Congress was an important one, as it for the first time gave an official public statement on the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. The documents printed here, several for the first time, were issued to accompany the publication of that message, with the Senate ordering 500 copies to be printed on 21 February 1795. Among the 8 documents found here are Washington’s 7 August 1794 Proclamation ordering the insurgents to disperse, letters from Secretary of State Edmund Randolph to James Ross Jasper Yeates and William Bradford (the commissioners appointed to treat with the insurrectionists); a 24 September 1794 report from the Commissioners to Washington, Washington’s 25 September 1794 Proclamation calling forth the militia to put down the rebellion, and Alexander Hamilton’s official report on the insurrection. Evans 29738; Howes P624; Sabin 65844.
