Title: Open Letter to the President of the United States, The Secretary of the interior, The Members of Congress, and the Judges of the Supreme Court of the United States. Author: [Stuart, James F.] Place: [San Francisco] Publisher: Bacon & Company Date: [c.1878] Description: 7 pp. Folding map. (8vo) original printed wrappers.. First Edition. Stuart, a prominent San Francisco lawyer whose expertise was land titles, represented California settlers whose homes were on public lands known as the Milpitas grant. These lands, he claims, had been transferred illegally via government officials "whose fraudulent decrees in land titles in this State have become notorious." Here he explains the fraud, recounts his thwarted efforts to redress the injustice, urges new proceedings to decide the "fraudulent character of this patent of the Milpitas grant" and to prevent settlers from being turned out of their homes, and recommends a law giving the Secretary of the Interior "the means, to defend and protect both the settlers and the government in cases like this Milpitas." Rocq 5571. Lot Amendments Condition: Light soiling, small chip to front wrapper, date in red ink on front wrapper; ink correction on page 5 (as usual); very good. Item number: 242086
