Title: Typed letter, signed from Joel Chandler Harris - after "Uncle Remus" Author: Harris, Joel Chandler Place: Atlanta, GA Publisher: Date: February 23, 1893 Description: 1 pp. On The Atlanta Constitution, Editorial Department letterhead. Addressed to magazine publisher S.S.McClure, New York, the letter reads: “”Thanks for the paper. The illustrations are apt and spirited. Did you see the Inter-Ocean’s editorial reference to the story? It was quite a compliment. I have another story under way, which would have been completed but for sickness in my family. I have to do this kind of work at home at night, you know.” Celebrated for his Black dialect Uncle Remus-Brer Rabbit stories, which first appeared in book form in 1880 and immortalized many African-American folk tales handed down by oral tradition, Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908) was a Georgia journalist who worked for an Atlanta newspaper for over 20 years, despite his growing literary fame. He also wrote for magazines in his spare time, including the Civil War short story mentioned in this letter - “The Comedy of War”, which appeared in the very first issue of the new McClure’s Magazine in June 1893. McClure also became Harris’ book publisher in the last years of his life. Lot Amendments Condition: Faint pencil marks on both sides; very good. Item number: 230258
