Each with the original mailing envelope, with Oakland and Papeete cancelations, respectively. Letters from Charmian London to the aging Rebecca Spring (1811-1911), an activist in liberal political and social causes, who moved to southern California in the late 1890’s and became involved with many artists and writers, Jack and Charmian among them as evidenced by these letters. Includes: December 28, 1906. On both sides of two folding lettersheets, each overall 16.5x26 cm. In part: “Bless your heart, dear woman, I do always look ‘as pretty as possible’ – that is, as pretty as it is possible for me to look… Every stitch of clothing I have goes on that boat… And let me tell you right here, that no woman ever had more incentive to look well, than I do. Jack adores my clothes. He will pick up my slippers & kiss them… I dress for my husband. Nothing every escapes him...” February 28, 1908. On both sides of one folding lettersheet, overall 16x24.5 cm. In part: “Jack and I were so excited to hear from you again… I wish I could tell you of our beautiful life, but I am working very very hard on copying my diary written about Hawaii – when I write detailed letters I am neglecting my work… As for my diary of the present voyage I am stalled way up in the Marquesas Islands, in Typee Valley!... But we are very very happy, that much I want you to hear. Our honeymoon seems only just beginning, & we are glad we are alive… We are in a lovely rose-emblazoned cottage set amongst breadfruit & bamboo trees, bananas & pandames (?); and from it we are now going for a swim down by the Snark in the harbor, to stretch and refresh ourselves…” Lot Amendments Condition: Old folds, overall fine.
