First pipe with rather plain bowl, but engraved all over with battles: "Franklin Nash," "Montgomery.Ebnezer.CH," "Columbus," "Selma," "Macon," "Atlanta," "Cynthiana," "Dandridge," "Knoxville," "Fairgarden" "Morristown," "DuckRiver," "Monre Vallow." With crossed sabers and "C 4 C" on one side, Union shield on the other. Second pipe carved wood, with metal ring around the top of the bowl, metal heart on bottom with "Chas. H. Cady / 11th Regiment Conn. Vols. / Newbern, NC / 1863." In original custom pipe case. Charles H. Cady enlisted in Nov. 1861 in Co. F, 11th CT Vols. He was discharged in Nov. 1864, having served three years. They went to Annapolis by way of New York City, and there in early January embarked on two vessels. They were caught in a large storm, and for a time were thought lost. They survived, although one ship was beached by a large wave, and by early March they were preparing to take Newbern. They then went to Fredericksburg and joined McClellan's forces. They fought in many Eastern Theater battles - South Mountain, Antietam, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and more. Of the nearly 1000 original men in the regiment, only about a quarter of the men veteranized. The rest, like Private Cady, went home. Provenance:Property of N. Flayderman & Co.
