Two Civil War Folk Art Carved Pipes Referencing Hilton Head, South Carolina

Beschreibung:

Lot of 2: Civil War Navy Sailor's carved pipe; fancy and uniquely shaped. Max. width approx. 5 inches; max. height 4 inches; dia. of the bowl at its tapered top 1.25 inches. Some simple incised cross-hatch carving around the top of the bowl and on sides very large naval fouled anchor incised carved on each side of bowl in center. Incised carved in simple, typically primitive but neat lettering around the wider mid-edge of bowl HILTON HEAD. Stem not original. Plus smaller folk art carved pipe, somewhat soft and splintery wood not typical of carved wood pipes from the period. Overall height 3.25 in.; bowl dia. 1.125 in. Accompanied by stem, may or may not be original to pipe. With Hilton and Head incised carved along each side of bowl, and SC carved in back of bowl. With what appears to be palm tree and trunk carved along center front of bowl. Provenance: Property of N. Flayderman & Co. Condition: Some light surface wear to each pipe, but overall very fine considering age and use.
