By an Officer of the United States Navy Author: [Ruschenberger, William Samuel Waithman] (1807-95) Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Carey, Lea & Blanchard Date: 1834 Description: xi, [1], [9]-441 + [20] ad pp. 9½x5¾, bound in late nineteenth century blue cloth-backed tan boards, paper spine label. First Edition. Ruschenberger's travel narrative contains seven chapters on trips to Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, seven for Chile, two for Bolivia, and twenty-five to Peru. He describes the climate, culture, commerce, resources, religions, slavery practices, etc. "The author was for many years chief surgeon of the U.S. Pacific Squadron and later of the U.S. Navy" - Smith, American Travellers Abroad, R61; Sabin 74195; Hill, p.262. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding and spine label somewhat worn, soiling, scuffs, corners bumped; hinges tender, mild foxing throughout, dampstaining to upper margins chiefly throughout; about very good.
