Title: Company K First Alabama Regiment, or Three Years in the Confederate Service Author: Smith, Daniel P. Place: Prattville, Alabama Publisher: Published by the Survivors Date: 1885 Description: 135, [10] pp. 18.8x12 cm. (7½x4¾"), light green cloth lettered in gilt. First Edition. Very rare Confederate company history, limited to only 25 copies, according to John Page Nicholson in the catalogue of his library of books relating to the War of the Rebellion (Philadelphia, 1914). Company K was an artillery unit in the First Alabama Infantry Regiment. They were engaged in the battles of New Madrid and Corinth, and were captured in the siege of Fort Hudson. They were paroled and reorganized in time to fight against Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign, and followed Hood into Tennessee during his disastrous attack on Nashville. They were with Johnson in the final days of the war in North Carolina, and finally surrendered their arms in Greensboro. Nevins calls the book "A good but brief narrative, far above the usual, statistical monologue normally found for company histories." OCLC/WorldCat lists 19 copies in libraries, so if Nicholson is correct that 25 copies were printed (a reasonable figure as they were produced for the few surviving members of the regiment), its appearance on the open market is a rare occurrence indeed. No copies have sold at auction since 1975, according to American Book Prices Current. The present copy has "No. 13" inked on the front pastedown, in a period hand. The book was printed in Philadelphia by Burk & McFetridge. Dornbusch II, 21; Howes S586; Nevins I, p.159; Nicholson p.784. Lot Amendments Condition: Insect damage around the front cover margins and spine, internally fine, tight and fresh. Item number: 214901
