THOMAS A KEMPIS (1380-1471). Of the following of Christ ... reviewed and in divers things corrected by M.C. [M. Pinckney] Confessor to the English Nuns at Paris . Paris: Mistris Blageart, 1636. 16° (111 x 71mm). Ruled in red, engraved frontispiece and address to the reader inserted from another edition inserted. (Lacks A1, small wormhole in a few final quires.) Contemporary Parisian gold-tooled mosaic binding of red morocco with olive and citron morocco inlays, by the atelier of the 'Maître Doreur', the sides decorated to a late fanfare design, the compartments filled with massed pointillé tooling, the spine similarly decorated, gilt turn-ins, edges painted, gilt and gauffered (expert repairs to a few inlays). A characteristic gilt mosaic binding by the 'Atelier du Maître Doreur', from its second period defined by Esmerian as 1632-38. The shop was first identified by Hobson in Les reliures à la fanfare . Four examples from it were owned by Ralph Esmerian, who knew of ten others. The author of this compilation, derived from Thomas a Kempis was co-founder of the English Augustinian convent at Paris; it is dedicated to its first abbess, Mary Treadway and her community, which Pinckney served as its confessor from 1634.
