Contemporary calf, sides with gilt fillet frame and centred with a gilt arabesque, later paper spine label in manuscript (rebacked preserving part of the original spine, repairs at the extremities, front joint split and upper board nearly detached). Provenance : pencilled shelf-marks on the title. FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE 16TH-CENTURY COSMOGRAPHY. This first volume relates to Africa and Asia; a second volume was also published, which covers Europe and America. Mortimer notes two issues: one with ã6 blank, and one with a portrait of Thevet printed on the verso of ã6; the present copy has the portrait mounted on the verso of blank ã6.
