The first of Thackeray's Christmas books, Mrs. Perkins's Ball sold only 1500 copies (and, in a spirit of humor, he gave it a bad review himself)! It is, in fact, funny enough as a jeux d'esprit. In this collection, there is a sketch for the title (lettered as "M. Titmarsh," his pseudonym); of the three musicians from the title, with a fine ink sketch on the verso; a pencil draft of the musicians and other title page details; an ink and wash drawing of Lord Methuselah and Miss Trotter; a pencil and wash drawing of Mr. Winter, Miss Mullins, the Reverend Mr. Toop, and Miss Ranville; a pencil and wash drawing of Mr. and Miss Joy; a charming finished pencil sketch of Tom Tozer; and an ink drawing of the redoubtable M.
