Swedish-born Gustaf Tenggren first came into prominence as an illustrator at 22 when he officially succeeded John Bauer as the chief illustrator of the Christmas fairy tale annual Bland Tomtar och Troll. Before leaving for America in 1920, he began his most ambitious work in Europe, a new two-volume illustrated edition of Grimm's fairy tales for Jespersen in Copenhagen. Not merely the influence of Bauer, but also that of Arthur Rackham Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac are evident in his extraordinary suite of watercolors for the classic German märchen. In Cleveland and later New York City, he continued to contribute to books, magazines and newspapers and worked for the game manufacturer Milton Bradley before Walt Disney Corp. brought him to Hollywood as chief designer of the first feature-length cartoon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). He also worked on Pinocchio (1940) and Bambi (1942) as well as the Silly Symphonies, The Old Mill(1937) and The Ugly Duckling (1939). Fed up with Disney, he left Hollywood in 1940 and devoted the rest of his life primarily to Golden Books. He illustrated the most successful of all the Little Golden Books, The Poky Little Puppy (1942).
