Pencil drawing of the famous Swiss miss for “A New Home with Grandfather” in Tenggren’s Story Book (New York: Simon & Schuster, 1944), p. 24. (170 x 285 mm). Matted and framed. While hardly out of his teens, Gustaf Tenggren succeeded John Bauer as the illustrator of the Swedish fairy tale annual Bland Tomtar och Troll . He emigrated to the United States in 1920 and was a successful commercial artist when Walt Disney brought him to Hollywood to work on his animated cartoons in 1936. Tenggren worked on the shorts The Old Mill (1937) and The Ugly Duckling (1939) and the feature films Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940) and Bambi (1942). After leaving Disney in 1940, he became a prolific illustrator of Little Golden Books. The most successful was The Poky Little Puppy (1942).
