Original brown half sheep over light brown linen-covered boards, black morocco title label on upper cover. Condition : some marginal chipping to plates 31, 36 & 40, title lightly browned and with some edge wear; expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. An important early American atlas, complete with the map of Texas. Starting in 1812, when he was in the employ of John Melish, Tanner was one of the very earliest professional mapmakers in the United States. In 1829, he published his famous New American Atlas which provided the success which enabled him to produce his Universal Atlas . This first appeared in 1833 but it did not include his version of Bradford's map of Texas until this issue was published in 1839. The map is unnumbered, and not present in the table of contents (as is always the case).
