Autograph letter signed ("WmH Taft") AS PRESIDENT to "My dear Misses Loring," Beverly, Massachusetts, 1 July 1911. 2 pages, small 8vo, blue Presidential stationery, original envelope in Taft's hand, written on pages one and four of a four-page sheet, an uncommon ALS as President: "Mrs. Taft and I were delighted, on our arrival at Beverly, to find your two cordial notes and the two books of poems with their sweet local flavor that you so kindly sent with them. We were very sorry you could not have been with us at...[the] wedding...I am glad to bring Mrs. Taft to this region of quiet and wholesome breezes..."; TAFT. Typed letter signed as President, to Dr. Hugh H. Hanna, Washington, D.C., 6 May 1911. 1 1/4 pages, 4to, White House letterhead stationery. TAFT QUOTES THE CONSTITUTION: He is pleased that "...my public expressions on the subject of the proposed arbitration treaty between the United States and Great Britain had been endorsed by...the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church....[The] question...is now under consideration by myself and the Secretary of State [Philander C. Knox], and should our efforts prove successful... such a resolution...would then be most useful...Your question as to where the Constitution lodges the power to make such treaties is answered by Article II of the Constutution, which provides: 'He (the President) shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur...'"; together 2 items .
