TAFT, WILLIAM HOWARD President . Typed letter signed ("Wm H Taft") as Chief Justice ofd the Supreme Court, to Senator Hiram Bingham, Washington, D.C., 3 March 1928. 1 page, 4to, on Supreme Court of the United States letterhead. The Chief justice responds to Bingham's inquiry regarding a letter evidently sent to him while President by Orville Wright, which Taft does not recall. "I have yours of March 1st. I don't know anything whatever about the controversy between Orville Wright and others. The Secretary [of the Smithsonian Institution], Mr. Walcott, was very familiar with it, but I don't think the matter was ever brought before the Regents to take any formal action. I presume, without knowing, that the letter which Mr. Wright wrote me was handed to Secretary Walcott. I think perhaps if you desire information, the best person to consult is the present Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, Dr. Abbot...."
