Title: SOLD BY PRIVATE TREATY Autograph Letter Signed by Ninian Edwards. Governor of Illinois, to Indian Agent Benjamin O’Fallon, regarding lawsuits against him by citizens of Missouri Author: Edwards, Ninian Place: Bellevue, IL Publisher: Date: Undated, c.1828 Description: 3+ pages, in ink, on 4-page stampless letter, addressed on p.4, with frank. Quarto. A rambling letter from Ninian Edwards, a towering figure in Illinois politics, the first territorial governor, serving three terms, from 1809 to 1818, one of the first two senators, and the third governor of the state. It was in this latter office that he writes this curious letter, apparently in response to various suits brought against him: “As Governor of this state it has been serious questioned whether I have a right to cross the river to your city. But I should willingly run the risk of it were not for the danger of encountering a more unpleasant one. It is my misfortune to have some violent enemies in St. Louis – and although I do not owe $100 in the world I am yet apprehensive that I might be sued & not be able to procure acceptable bail. Col. Paul is the only man that pretends to have any claim upon me… He however once sued me and held me to bail for $17,000… He now pretends to claim about $5,000 of me, and this is the only case in which I ever had occasion to ask any man to be my security or bail. That request was made of my friend Gov. Clark & your brother Col. O’Fallon – and although I offered to put in their hands available funds to twice the amount of Paul’s demand, they both declined rendering me this service…” And on and on. It seems that questionable financial dealings of Illinois governors is not a practice of recent vintage. Provenance: Descended in the Benjamin O’Fallon family. Lot Amendments Condition: Some discoloration and light stains, a short closed tear, very good. Item number: 220180
