Beschreibung:

Remarkable, artfully posed sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of an aged woman wearing a black, mourning gown, seated with her dog at her side. She holds a pair of spectacles in one hand, and an oval portrait, possibly a daguerreotype, depicting a gentleman who is presumably her deceased husband, hangs from the head brace stand beside her. The woman's face and the man's portrait are in perfect focus, though the scene gets slightly fuzzy toward the bottom of the frame. Housed in a red leather booklet case with Bijou imprinted on the spine and gilt floral designs on the covers, also containing a sixth plate daguerreotype of a younger woman, probably the couple's daughter. Acquired from a flea market in Jackson, California, a town in the northern Sierra Nevada foothills founded at the outset of the California Gold Rush. Condition: Very minor tarnish limited to extreme mat edges. Case with light shelf wear, with the covers starting to loosen from the spine.
