SIR ROBERT MACLEOD HODGSON (1874-1956) An archive of documents and photographs from the distinguished diplomatic career of Sir Robert Macleod Hodgson, Vice-Consul of Marseilles (1904-1907), Chargé d'Affaires, Moscow (1924-1927), Minister and Consul-General to Albania (1928-1936) and Chief British Agent in Nationalist Spain (1937-1939), comprising: i) Despatch from the Foreign Office, signed 'Austen Chamberlain', 13 February 1927, 2pp, folio, thanking him and his staff for his services in Russia up to the suspension of diplomatic relations, despite 'trying conditions, physical and moral' (creased on folds, rust marks, slight spotting). ii) Commission, signed 'George R.I.', 1 May 1928, 10pp with typed outer cover, appointing Hodgson H.M. Minister to Albania, with embossed paper seal. iii) Typed copy of a letter from Hodgson, from the British Embassy, Burgos, 2 March 1939, 6pp, folio, to General Count Jordana, Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, informing him that the British government recognised Generalissimo Franco's National government as the government of Spain; with three other letters relating to Spanish matters. iv) A collection of 13 black and white photographs including Edward VII on a state visit to Marseilles, Hodgson with his diplomatic bag in Moscow, pictures of Spain and the embassy including images of the civil war (1936-1939); portrait photograph of King Zog of Albania, signed and dated July 1936 at Dirazzo. v) Hodgson's 'Red Box' in red morocco, embossed in gilt 'British Mission Moscow' with the monogram of George V, with key (worn). vi) Various press cuttings and information about his career, a photograph album (1904-1907) containing 24 photographs depicting the consulate at Marseilles, his colleagues in the office and relaxing. vii) Portrait of Hodgson, head and shoulders, pastel, 480 x 375mm., framed and glazed.
