SHAW, GEORGE BERNARD. Nine autograph postcards signed (two "G. Bernard Shaw," the rest with initials) to eight different recipients, nearly all London and Ayot St. Lawrence, 12 December 1894-23 May 1931. Together 9 pages, small 12mo-12mo, one in pencil, most on Shaw's imprinted card, one with a printed form message added to holograph by Shaw, another with his photograph on verso . 12 December 1894, to the actor Albert E. Drinkwater: "...P.S. The play has had a roaring newspaper boom in Boston. Would it be worth while to prepare a circular containing all the news about the play to send to the local papers in advance of the tour?" 11 May 1913, to the editor H.W. Massingham (one of two cards to him): "I propose next week to give the New Statesman a rest and leave Leonard Hobhouse a corpse in The Nation . He is getting...degenerate & will be the better for it. And The Case for Equality is catching on a little..." 17 July 1918, to G. Esme Percy, regarding performance fees: "...The author-worms have turned, and will hear no more of patriotism at the expense of starving Grub St..." 14 August 1925, to J.G. Bettany: "I remember speaking at a dinner given to [Rev. Stewart Headlam]; and if due allowance be made for the fact that Busby was probably drunk, as all men are at public dinners, he is as near the truth as could be expected. But I do not want your readers to conclude that I was drunk..." 10 February 1928, to the writer James Stephens: "How very inexperienced of you! Lord bless you, you should never put anyone in the chair but a nonentity. If you want to make a success as Hamlet, don't get Edmund Kean to play Horatio... If you let me near the place the papers will report -- or misreport -- every word I say, and leave no room for you..." (9)
