(Cuba - Baseball) Set of 1951 Cuban Mejoral baseball cards, one featuring Hoyt Wilhelm during his brief tenure with the Havana Lions (Habana Leones) Place Published: Havana, Cuba Date Published: 1951 Description: 10 "cards" with 17 baseball players - some with pictures front and back (those that don't have advertising text). These were all part of a foldout in a Cuban League booklet, and have been separated from each other - they are referred as either cards or as a foldout, depending on whether they are separated. Each card measures approx. 7.7x5.5 cm (3x2¼"), thin paper. Rare baseball "card" featuring future hall of fame pitcher Hoyt Wilhelm when he was with the Havana Lions, the year before he began his major league career as a 29-year-old knuckleball-throwing relief pitcher. Hoyt Wilhelm's Mejoral card is considered to be his "pre-rookie B card". There is another 1951 Cuban card of Hoyt Wilhelm considered his pre-rookie "A" card. Other players pictured include 2nd baseman Johnny Jorgensen; pitcher Don Habenicht; 1st baseman Steve Bilko (who made it to the major leagues in 1949); 3rd baseman Bert Hass (in the major leagues from 1933 to 1951); Delbert ("Del") Wilber (listed as a 3rd baseman on the card but played as a catcher for St. Louis, Philadelphia and Boston, 1946-54); Manager Mike Gonzalez; and others.
