SARFATI, Joseph ben Moses (early 15th century). Ir Sichon (on arithmetics). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Spain, 15th century] 16 o[?] (130 x 100 mm). 58 leaves. Brown ink. Sephardic semi-cursive script, fol. 11 in a different hand. (Dampstained, resulting in fading of the larger part of the text, generally well legible, with the exception of fol. 1r, fol. 1 upper corner and lower margin damaged, fol. 2 lower margin damaged, still an attractive medieval manuscript.) Seventeenth-century Italian gold-tooled brown mottled calf, covers with centerpiece ornament and dentelle border built up of floral and acorn tools, gilt edges (rebacked), two modern paper flyleaves at back and front, one additional older flyleaf at the front with a later title in Italian square script on the recto and a later note on the content of Ir Sichon on the verso. CONTENTS: The work was probably composed at the beginning of the fifteenth century. It exists in several manuscripts (Ithaca, NY, Cornell Univ. MS A26; Moscow, Guenzburg 138; St. Petersburg, IOS, B176, Munich, SB, Cod. hebr. 68; and Vatican, cod. ebr. 397), but has never been printed. The present manuscript is unusual for its small size, which is fairly uncommon for a medieval Hebrew manuscript. REFERENCES: Neubauer, no. 133, p. 38; Institute of Microfilmed Hebrew Manuscripts, Jerusalem, F 4795.
